Athens in a Day

A perfect Athens day: Mount Lycabettus views, the Acropolis up close, then wander the charming old town streets.

All of Greece is wonderful, but Crete holds a special place in my heart because of its unmatched hospitality. The people there make you feel like a guest in their home. Santorini is more touristy, but it’s stunningly beautiful. The history of Athens is unmatched. Below are my recommendations for places to visit in Crete, Santorini and Athens

About this stop: A perfect Athens day: Mount Lycabettus views, the Acropolis up close, then wander the charming old town streets.

Suggested itinerary

  • Start the day with the hike up Mount Lycabettus. It is a steady walk, but totally doable, and the payoff is one of the best views in Athens. You get that sweeping look over the city with the Acropolis sitting out in the distance like it is waiting for you.
  • Take your time at the top. This is one of those moments where you just stand there and let Athens sink in for a bit. Grab a coffee or a water if you want, then wander back down when you are ready.
  • Later, head to the Acropolis. It is obviously a must, but what surprised me is how moving it feels in person. You have seen photos a thousand times, but standing there with the city spread out below you is a completely different thing.
  • Spend some time walking around the Acropolis area afterward too, not just the main site. The streets nearby are full of little viewpoints, corners with ruins tucked in, and that feeling that history is just sitting out in the open.
  • As the day winds down, make your way into the old town area for the evening. This is the perfect way to end the day, just wandering through charming streets until you find the right place to eat.
  • The area around Agion Anargyron Square is especially good for this. It has that relaxed, local energy, and it feels like a softer, more human side of Athens after the big highlights earlier.
  • Grab dinner somewhere in that neighborhood, take your time, and then do one last slow walk after. Athens at night in that part of town is the kind of ending you remember.
