All of Greece is wonderful, but Crete holds a special place in my heart because of its unmatched hospitality. The people there make you feel like a guest in their home. Santorini is more touristy, but it’s stunningly beautiful. The history of Athens is unmatched. Below are my recommendations for places to visit in Crete, Santorini and Athens
About this stop: Hand-thrown ceramics, hidden coves, a harbour-front dinner and sunset boat ride.
Suggested itinerary
- We stayed at an AirBnB outside of Rethymno.
- It was a short drive up to Margarites. Start by grabbing a coffee at one of the cafes as you enter the town.
- Then wander the pottery streets. Margarites is known for handmade ceramics.
- If Kerameion is open and the owner is working or running a workshop, pop in. It is fun to see the process, not just the finished pieces.
- Have lunch at Taverna Mantalos on the terrace. The food is great, and the view is the main event. You are looking out over the valley and, on a clear day, all the way to the water.
- After lunch, go get in the sea. If you want something a little dramatic, head to Spilies Beach with the rock walls and that clear water. If you want easy and sandy, Pigianos Kampos is a good choice and super straightforward.
- In the late afternoon, head into Rethymno and walk the old town. It is charming, it is easy to explore, and it has that mix of little shops and cafes that makes you want to keep wandering. To me it feels like a smaller, more manageable version of Chania, which I also love.
- Stop at Olive Tree Bar Cafe for a drink before dinner.
- Finish with sunset dinner at Prima Plora. This is my favorite restaurant in Crete. The food is delicious and the view is outstanding. If you can, reserve a table right by the sea.
- Prima Plora is amazing, but if you have another night in the area look into chartering a boat for a sunset excursion. You will be taken to some spectacular beaches, seaside rock formation, hidden caves and more. This was one of our most memorable activities.
